Tips for Healthy Digestion

Common digestive problems such as gas and constipation may not be the best topics for conversation, but considering how many people have them, it’s surprising that we don’t discuss them more.

digestive-systemNowadays, many people are facing digestive problem, and it has been disturbed their daily life. The good news is that when provided with a healthy diet, the digestive tract is well-designed to take care of things naturally. That means providing your system with plenty of fibre from fresh fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains, along with probiotics beneficial bacteria found in certain foods that help maintain the proper balance of the micro-organisms – called flora – that live in your digestive tract.

 Fibre

Fibre is the structural portion of a plant, and it is found in whole fruits, vegetables, beans, and grains like oats and brown rice. Adults should be eating approximately 30 grams a day, but the average adults only eats about two thirds of that.

fiber-foodsOur busy lifestyles contribute to the problem – when we’re on the go, we’re less likely to eat the high fibre fruits, vegetables and wholegrains that are more typically found at home. Different types of fibre have different effects on the body, and it’s important to get plenty of fibre from a variety of sources.

Water-soluble fibres are found in the highest concentration in apples, oranges, carrots, potatoes, oats, barley, and beans. Water-soluble fibre increases the time it takes for food to pass through the digestive system, and produces a feeling of fullness. Water-soluble fibres also slow the absorption of sugar from the blood stream, helping to keep blood sugar levels ore even throughout the day in normal, healthy people.

This type of fibre is also helpful in maintaining healthy blood cholesterol levels, which is why oats and oat bran have been popular for heart health. Water-insoluble fibres are found in the highest concentrations in vegetables, wheat bran, corn bran, rice bran, and most other wholegrains. These fibres speed up the transfer of food through the intestines and also trap water, so they are particularly helpful in preventing constipation.

Probiotics

While the idea of consuming bacteria in the diet may not sound appealing, probiotic bacteria found in yogurt and other fermented dairy products can promote digestive health. Your digestive system is home to hundreds of types of probiotics, and these helpful bacteria keep the growth of other, potentially harmful, bacteria at bay thus promoting healthy digestion.

Probiotic-foodThe bacteria in your system also help to break down foods that are resistant to normal digestion, allowing you to obtain more nutrients from your foods. In the process, gas is produced but we have other gas-guzzling bacteria that keep its production in check. So, a healthy balance of these various intestinal €˜bugs’ is key to a well-functioning digestive tract.

One of the most common strains of probiotic bacteria that reside in your intestines is Lactobacillus acidophilus, which is found in yoghurt. When you eat yoghurt that has €˜active, live cultures’ (the label will tell you), you can be assured that you are consuming this healthy probiotic.

Putting it All Together

To keep your system running smoothly, include some fruits or vegetables at every meal and snack, cut back on refined grain products in favour of those made with wholegrains, and work to increase your intake of water-soluble fibre from foods like beans, barley and oats. And don’t forget to drink plenty of fluids. Yoghurt is great in a protein shake, or topped with fruit for breakfast or a snack. If you feel you can’t meet your fibre needs, you can add a fibre supplement. Keep in mind that supplements don’t replace healthy fruits, vegetables, and wholegrains in your diet, but they can offer additional dietary fibre you need to keep your digestive tract running smoothly.
